WhatsApp Reaches 2 Billion Users Worldwide

WhatsApp Reaches 2 Billion Users Worldwide: The messaging app has captured nearly 500 million new users in less than two years.

WhatsApp has passed the symbolic milestone of 2 billion users worldwide. Instant messaging welcomed the figure in a statement posted Wednesday, February 12 on its parent company’s Facebook blog.

We are excited to share that WhatsApp now supports more than two billion users around the world. 1/10

Launched in 2011 by Jan Koum and Brian Acton, the app was purchased in 2014 by Facebook for more than $ 20 billion. At the time, it had only 450 million users. Today, it has risen to the top of the American group’s messaging service.

Its success is based on its ease of use, a simple internet connection is enough, and the possibility of making calls, sending written or voice messages, as well as any other document without having to go through a telephone operator. The Facebook group now wants to monetize the platform by focusing on businesses and customer relationships, rather than overly intrusive advertisements.

The application should also soon indicate in its name, a mention that will highlight its membership in the Facebook group.

The company also recalled on this occasion the importance it attached to the protection of the data of these users. “As we spend more and more time online, protecting our conversations is more important than ever,” the statement said.

WhatsApp has always claimed to provide encryption and “strong encryption” of messages sent instantly via the application. Last May, the messaging service admitted to being infected with spyware giving access to the content of its users’ smartphones.

The hackers then exploited a security hole by simply calling users on the application to insert malware. “Today, we remain as determined as to when we started, helping to connect the world privately and protecting the personal communication of two billion users around the world,” said the messenger.
